The homeowner’s inspiration—a room-like garden discovered in London now needed to take shape in a dream home being built just outside Boston. To really convey the feel of an interior space, this outside one would require a ceiling. It would take the form of a canopy of perfectly pruned Plane trees that would, over time, branch out and serve as this horizontal architectural element. Looking completely at home now, you’d never guess these trees started life in a nursery 500 miles away. Upon their arrival in this Massachusetts backyard, an intricate bamboo trellis and support system was installed to finish perfecting their form. Finally, to complete this space, large squares of Chinese granite were laid to define the floor. Now this outside room feels as welcoming as any other in this one-of-a-kind home.
